Your Journey Begins
Meet us at our depot on Revell St at 9:45 AM (or at an arranged time) for a bike fit and briefing. We'll then head to the Kawhaka Canal, just a 30-minute drive through farmland, where your adventure begins.
Ride through Nature's Splendor
Cycle alongside the peaceful Kawhaka Canal, then climb towards Kawhaka Pass, where juvenile Kea, New Zealand's famous alpine parrots might be spotted. Ride through native bush, home to tall kahikatea trees and moss-covered ferns, and enjoy the sounds of native birds like Bellbirds and Tui. The descent leads to the Arahura River valley, an area rich in history. The Arahura River, famous for its greenstone (pounamu), was once a vital resource for the local Ngāi Tahu iwi.
Lake Kaniere
Continue on to Lake Kaniere, an 8km-long lake surrounded by towering kahikatea trees. Stop for a refreshing swim or simply soak in the stunning views. Then, take the downhill ride through more native bush alongside the historic Kaniere Water Race—hand-dug in 1875 as Hokitika's water supply. This fascinating piece of local history offers an insight into the ingenuity of early settlers. As you cycle along this remarkable water race, you'll be surrounded by lush forest, and the sounds of native birdsong will fill the air.
A Scenic Finish
The final stretch takes you through the Kaniere Tram Road, leading back into Hokitika. Finish your day exploring the local art and craft shops, or unwind in one of the town's charming cafés.
