Kawarau Gorge Trail | 1 Day - Self-guided 39km (Grade 2-3, Intermediate)

This self-guided bike tour includes trail comfort bike rental and shuttles to connect you with the trail.

There's a professional and comprehensive trail briefing and professional bike fitting before getting out on the trail
Enjoy a natural ongoing descent on the trail riding in this direction
Wind beneath the Nevis Bluff, and enjoy access to previously inaccessible terrain along the gorge
Stop in at the Goldfields Mining Centre to explore the gold mining history of the area (optional, entry not included)
Journey across two suspension bridges that cross the Kawarau River
Stop in for a cooling refreshment at Bannockburn Hotel to top off the day
It's just 9km on a cruisy trail around the Bannockburn Inlet to the Kiwi Journeys hub to end the day

Due to the trail’s backcountry nature, terrain and exposure in places, riders should have a reasonable level of cycling confidence and experience. This ride is not recommended for beginners.

Option A

Check-in Gibbston (ride Gibbston-Cromwell)

Begin your ride from our Gibbston depot at Mt Rosa Wines and cycle to Cromwell

Ride: Gibbston to Cromwell, suggested arrival: 10am
Return shuttle departs Cromwell at 4:30pm
Arrives back at Gibbston at 5pm

>> It is possible to add return shuttles to connect to and from the trail heads to this option (A) during checkout:

From Arrowtown at 8.30am for $30 per person
From Queenstown at 8am for $40 per person

Option B

Check-in Cromwell (ride Gibbston-Cromwell)

Park at our Cromwell depot and take our morning shuttle to Gibbston

Shuttle departs Cromwell at 8:30am
Ride: Gibbston to Cromwell
Finish at your vehicle in Cromwell by 4.30pm

Grade & Distances

Self-guided experience

Distance – approximately 39kms, depot to depot

The Kawarau Gorge Trail is rated as an intermediate (Grade 2–3) cycling and walking trail

Approximately 3–5-hours of riding featuring spectacular, narrow sections with steep drop-offs, suspension bridges, and compacted gravel terrain following the river
The trail is largely a backcountry trail, and as such, a decent level of fitness and biking experience is required to enjoy this trail

Accidents do happen, we highly recommend you take accidental damage insurance. For example if the bike fell over and damaged a wheel, stand, derailleur or eBike computer, we will cover it! (new eBike computer = $250)
