Kawarau Gorge Trail | 1 Day - Self-guided 39km (Grade 2-3, Intermediate)

This self-guided bike tour includes trail comfort bike rental and shuttles to connect you with the trail.

  • There's a professional and comprehensive trail briefing and professional bike fitting before getting out on the trail
  • From Cromwell, a short stint on the Lake Dunstan Trail connects you with the Bannockburn trail head
  • Journey across two suspension bridges that cross the Kawarau River
  • Stop in at the Goldfields Mining Centre to explore the gold mining history of the area (optional, entry not included)
  • Wind beneath the Nevis Bluff, and enjoy access to previously inaccessible terrain along the gorge
  • Celebrate your ride at the Kiwi Journeys depot located at Mt Rosa Wines - the perfect location to sit back, relax and debrief about your adventure


Due to the trail’s backcountry nature, terrain and exposure in places, riders should have a reasonable level of cycling confidence and experience. This ride is not recommended for beginners.

Option A

Check-in Cromwell (ride Cromwell-Gibbston)

Begin your ride from our Cromwell depot and cycle to Gibbston

  • Ride: Cromwell to Gibbston (suggested arrival: 9.30am)
  • Return shuttle departs Gibbston at 4pm
  • Arrives back at Cromwell at 4.30pm


Option B

Check-in Gibbston (ride Cromwell-Gibbston)

Park at our Gibbston depot and take our morning shuttle to Cromwell

  • Shuttle departs Gibbston at 9:15am
  • Ride: Cromwell to Gibbston
  • Finish at your vehicle in Gibbston by 4.45pm

Grade & Distances

  • Self-guided experience 
  • Distance – approximately 39kms, depot to depot
  • The Kawarau Gorge Trail is rated as an intermediate-level (Grade 2–3) cycling and walking trail
  • Approximately 3–5-hours of riding featuring spectacular, narrow sections with steep drop-offs, suspension bridges, and compacted gravel terrain following the river
  • The trail is largely a backcountry trail, and as such, a decent level of fitness and biking experience is required to enjoy this trail

Accidental damage insurance:

Accidents do happen, we highly recommend you take accidental damage insurance. For example if the bike fell over and damaged a wheel, stand, derailleur or eBike computer, we will cover it! (new eBike computer = $250)
