Looking for an unforgettable cycling adventure through some of New Zealand’s most stunning landscapes? The Lake Dunstan Discovery Tour offers the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. Cycle along the crystal-clear waters of Lake Dunstan, and enjoy the spectacular views of Central Otago’s rugged beauty. The Lake Dunstan Trail offers an accessible ride past vineyards, historic sites, and charming townships at either end of the trail.

We recommend riding this direction from Clyde to Cromwell.  We believe it ensures a safer, more relaxing ride, as it keeps you on the inside of the trail, away from potential hazards, making for a more enjoyable and stress-free ride. You'll also arrive to the Bannockburn Inlet region and Carrick Winery around 1pm, the perfect time to enjoy a celebratory lunch and drinks  overlooking the incredible views.

This self-guided bike tour includes trail comfort bike rental and shuttles to connect you with the trail.

• Transfer to Clyde for the start of the trail in the morning by Kiwi Journeys shuttle or upgrade to the Lake Dunstan Explorer scenic boat transfer ($100pp)

Previous cycling experience is essential for enjoyment of this trail.  This ride is not recommended for beginners.

Check-in Cromwell (ride Clyde-Cromwell)

After a shuttle to Clyde, join the Lake Dunstan Trail, ending your ride at our Cromwell depot at the Freeway Orchard complex 

• Shuttle departs Cromwell at 9am
• Ride: Clyde to Cromwell to Clyde
• Return to the Cromwell depot around 4.15pm

• NB: upgrade for $100pp to the Lake Dunstan Explorer scenic cruise in the morning (9.15am) instead of travelling to Clyde by road - a wonderful way to get a different perspective of the lake and the trail, with informative commentary and a wonderful host!

Grade & Distances

• Self-guided experience 
• Distance – approximately 43kms, depot to depot
• The Lake Dunstan Trail is rated as an intermediate-level (Grade 2–3) cycling and walking trail
• Approximately 3–5-hours of riding featuring spectacular, narrow sections with steep drop-offs, suspension bridges, and compacted gravel terrain 
• The route of the trail is largely remote, and as such, a decent level of fitness and biking experience is required to enjoy it

Accidental damage insurance:

Accidents do happen, we highly recommend you take accidental damage insurance. For example if the bike fell over and damaged a wheel, stand, derailleur or eBike computer, we will cover it! (new eBike computer = $250)
